1 January 2013 — 1 January 2014

A timeline of Islamic State hostage taking 

During 2013 a number of hostages were captured by the Islamic State group, or by others and then sold to IS. Amongst those kidnapped were British aid workers Alan Henning and David Haines and US journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley – whose disappearances had not been reported under Foreign Office and US Government guidelines.

 

2 March 2014 — 30 March 2014

Three Spanish journalists freed

The Islamic State group freed three Spanish journalists during the course of March 2014 – Marc Marginedas at the start of the month and Javier Espinosa and Ricardo García Vilanova at the end of the month. Spain has denied media reports that it paid a ransom for their release.
