SDG3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages 

Target 3.1: By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births

  • 303,000 women died due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth in 2015. Almost all of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries (99%). Reducing maternal mortality crucially depends upon ensuring that women have access to quality care before, during and after childbirth. 
  • Available data since 2007 shows that less than half of all births in several low- and middle-income countries were assisted by skilled health personnel. Globally it is estimated that over 40% of all pregnant women were not receiving early antenatal care in 2013. 

Target 3.2: By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under five years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-five mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births
