Results of a freedom of information (FOI) request, published by leading children’s charity the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), suggest that on any given day as many as 14,800 children are missing education in England.
Of these, over 3,000 are children whose whereabouts are unknown to their school or local authority – not only jeopardising their education but also indicating some may be at risk of more serious harm or neglect.
139 of the 152 local authorities in England responded to a FOI request in January 2014 and provided data on children missing education in their area. However, a lack of consistency in the methods used to collect information, and the absence of any national data from the Department of Education, means the overall picture is difficult to assess. NCB’s analysis is based on information from the local authorities that provided ‘snapshot’ data for a particular day.
