Sugar consumption has soared during lockdown, but much of it is hidden in foods that aren’t obviously sweet – here’s how to cut down.

If there’s one thing we can do to improve our health as we emerge from this pandemic, it is to eat less sugar. Comfort eating has soared as coronavirus has swept through the nation, with the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey showing the average adult is eating roughly 12 teaspoons of sugar a day, double the recommended amount.

Manufacturers have capitalised on the need for a sweet kick in tough times. Krispy Kreme in the USA announced this week that is offering a free doughnut to anyone who gets the vaccine, and Irn-Bru has rolled out a nostalgic spin-off drink based on an old recipe, Irn-Bru 1901, which contains even more sugar than the original.
