Sixty-four years ago today, the UN proclaimed 10 December as Human Rights Day to “bring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to attention as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”. It marks the end of 16 Days of Activism, which aims to raise awareness of violence against women and girls as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international levels.
As the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, said: “Violence against women continues to persist as one of the most heinous, systematic and prevalent human rights abuses in the world. It is a threat to all women, and an obstacle to all our efforts for development, peace and gender equality in all societies.
