While many British people living in Spain enjoy spending time in bars that remind them of home, a sizeable cohort are committed to integrating in their adopted country.

A new study has found that Britons who move to Spain are more likely to seek the familiarity of their compatriots – at least at first – than to plunge themselves into a society where they do not speak the language.

However, this can change if they marry Spaniards or decide to settle in Spain for good.

Among the 400,000 UK citizens who live in Spain – the largest group of Britons outside their own country – some see themselves as migrants in their adopted country who have integrated while others are happy to be seen as ‘expats’.
