General Article ‘Treat all’ to end AIDS

Achieving the global target to end AIDS by 2030 will require rapid and effective implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) ‘treat all’ recommendations, as noted by delegates from countries and partner organizations at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS. At the end of 2015, more than 17 million people were receiving antiretroviral therapy out of a total 37 million people living with HIV.

Opening the WHO side event Treat all: from policy to action – what will it take?, the Director of the WHO HIV Department, Dr Gottfried Hirnschall said, “Over the past ten months, an encouraging number of countries have introduced ‘treat all’ policies and began implementation, which is a great start,” said Dr Hirnschall.



As of June 2016, close to 80 low- and middle-income countries have adopted ‘treat all’ policies or announced plans to do so within the year. Of these countries, 24 have already started implementation of ‘treat all’ policies.
