General Article Bridge fans breathe a sigh of relief: bridge is now a sport

The English Bridge Union is delighted at the recommendation from the Advocate General at the European Court, that ‘mind sports’, and specifically Bridge, should be given equal standing to ‘more physical’ sports when relating to VAT. The EU’s VAT exemption for sport supports competitive activities which have benefits for the health and well-being of the participant. Most people likely approve of the sentiment of the regulation, but arguments over any individual’s definition of ‘sport’ detracts from the point that encouraging and enabling more people to play Bridge should also be encouraged. First and foremost, Bridge is played for fun. Ask anyone who plays, and they will say they do so because they enjoy it. Dig deeper and you reveal why the public should support any measure which enables more people to play.
