General Article Detention centres in the UK: a question of double standards

It has been reported on many occasions that some immigrants wait up to five years in detention for their cases to be resolved. But this time a report reveals the accounts of 26 witnesses, together with 182 written declarations, figures for absurd detentions and abuses on the part of the authorities.

Abdal, a man now aged 30, came to the United Kingdom in 2003 and sought asylum after being tortured and persecuted in Sudan because of his political activity.

He has over 200 scars on his body, although he does not like to talk about his experience.

‘As one of the longest-serving detainees in UK history, he was detained altogether for over five years and was transferred to nearly every single detention centre across the UK. His experiences of detention served to both exacerbate existing trauma but also created new mental health issues. Since his release from detention, he is on 17 different kinds of medication.’
