In 2012/13 GamCare answered 16,168 calls from problem gamblers and people affected by gambling, an increase of 2.8% from the previous year. The number of people gambling online also increased, from 23% in 2011/12 to 26% in 2012/13.
Online gambling is currently the second most popular method across all age groups and experts believe that a rise in mobile technology, such as 3G and 4G, will only fuel its accessibility – especially among the young.
According to H2 Gambling Capital, the global GGY (gross gaming yield) for remote gambling in 2011 was £20.1 billion, a 10% increase on the previous year. The Responsible Gambling Association says that remote gambling is the ‘newest and fastest growing part of the world gambling industry,’ and that ‘newer, cheaper and modern communication technologies will mean continued growth of online leisure services for which online gambling is one.’ Ironically, however, the development of communication technologies ...
