You may not think it’s possible to be frugal and follow a healthy diet at the same time. While some foods can be expensive, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best.

You can still follow a healthy and balanced diet by shopping smart with our ten top tips.

1. Plan your meals

At the beginning of the week, take your time to make a grocery list of everything you need for your meals. This will help you buy only what you need and keep impulse purchases and overspending at bay.

2. Base your meals on starchy foods

These include bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, and are recommended to be the main energy source of your meals. Not only is it a tick in the box for healthy eating, these foods are easy on the purse strings too. Opt for wholemeal or brown versions where possible.

3. Keep your eyes peeled for special offers
