Almost exactly a year ago, I lost my best friend. Not to death, thank goodness, or even betrayal. In the end, I lost her to apathy – ‘a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern’, as defined by the dictionary – which ranks below death and arguably above betrayal when it comes to the sadness of a break–up.
‘Break–up’ is a term generally reserved to describe the dissolution of a romantic relationship, but friendship has much in common. The only thing, really, that distinguishes a lover from a friend is sex. Everything else – loyalty, support, humour and companionship – exists in both. When you break–up with a lover, the part you cry over is rarely the sex. It’s the partnership you miss.
