Government urges public to help ensure new law is a success.

The RSPCA has warned that Covid-19 could have a huge impact on the welfare of newborn puppies as the Lucy’s Law ban on third-party sales comes into force.

The association welcomed the new law, which means that from Monday, all dogs must now be bought from the breeder, or from a reputable rescue organisation.

However, it expressed concern that just as the law was being brought in, puppy welfare faces a major threat from coronavirus.

‘We have concerns that the Covid-19 lockdown will have a huge impact on animal welfare in this area,’ said David Bowles, of the RSPCA.

‘Many puppies who have been bred to sell in time for the summer boom will be left languishing and suffering in silence in terrible conditions on puppy farms, or will be abandoned and left to fend for themselves.’

The RSPCA revealed that it has looked into almost 28,168 complaints about the illegal puppy trade in the last 10 years.
