The number of people forced to flee their homes has hit an historic high, with more than 70 million people currently displaced by war, persecution and conflict, the UN’s refugee agency has warned.

By the end of last year 70.8 million people were displaced globally – an increase of 2.3 million since 2017 and almost double the level of 20 years ago, the report found.

The figures – which include 41.3 million people displaced within their own country, 25.6 million refugees and 3.5 million asylum seekers (someone who has submitted an application for asylum in another country) – demonstrate that forced migration is ‘becoming an entrenched norm’, according to the UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR.
