Over the last century, gender roles have changed dramatically – not just in the home and in society generally, but in the workplace as well. No longer are women expected to endure a life of domestic drudgery; in some countries at least, their right to go out and earn a wage is now almost universally acknowledged. While there is still some way to go before we can say that we have true gender equality at work, it’s nevertheless worth noting just how much progress has been made over the last 100 years.

Women at work: the present day

In the present day, women are far more visible both in work and across public life than they were in previous decades. Women occupy prominent roles in business, politics and the media alike. Even so, there’s still a lot of work to be done – according to the Fawcett Society, the gender pay gap is 14.2%, with women effectively working for free from 9 November until the end of the year in comparison to their male co-workers.
